ThumbJam goes beyond typical music apps by incorporating tilt and shake functionalities. These features add vibrato, tremolo, note bends, and volume swells for more natural and expressive performances. The app supports up to five (eleven on iPad) simultaneous touches and up to 32 voice polyphony across eight loaded instruments. Additionally, delay and stereo reverb effects enhance the depth of the sound, while a resonant lowpass filter allows for greater tone shaping flexibility. In terms of composition and production, ThumbJam offers extensive features for creating loops. Whether you want to build your own loops from scratch or import your favorites and jam from there, the app provides seamless integration. You can layer multiple loops with distinct instruments, and easily export your creations as audio files via WiFi. The app also supports AudioCopy/Paste, allowing you to copy and paste audio from other applications. Compatibility with Audiobus and InterApp Audio enables real-time streaming of sound to and from other apps, while supporting state save/restore capability with Audiobus 3.

ThumbJam excels in MIDI input and output support, enabling wireless or Bluetooth connections with CoreMidi compatible devices or other apps on the same iOS device. It even supports Ableton Link for tight synchronization between apps across a network. The app also pioneered support for MPE input and output.

The app offers an extensive range of scales, including Western and Eastern scales, with the ability to save your favorites or create custom scales within the app. You can even import new scales in the Scala format, providing complete flexibility in musical exploration.

ThumbJam allows you to record your own multi-sampled instruments using the built-in or attached microphone, as well as import instruments from external files.

Additionally, it includes unique instruments created by Jordan Rudess himself: JR Zendrix and JR Smooth Steel.

The app also offers a plethora of additional instruments available for free download within the app, including several drum kits, Mellotron, basses, banjo, tabla, ukulele, guitars, and more. Access these instruments under the Sound menu by selecting Download Samples.
